Spain vs Argentina Finalissima Called Off Amid Middle East Conflict

The highly anticipated Finalissima match between Spain, winners of Euro 2024, and Argentina, reigning world champions, scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, has been cancelled, according to UEFA.

UEFA explained that it was “not possible to reach agreement with Argentina” on an alternative date or venue, due to ongoing conflicts in the Middle East affecting the region.

“It is deeply disappointing that circumstances and timing have prevented the teams from competing for this prestigious trophy in Qatar,” UEFA stated.

The Finalissima traditionally pits the latest Copa America winners against the European champions. Argentina claimed the inaugural edition in 2022 by defeating Italy at Wembley Stadium in London. The match against Spain would also have marked the first meeting between Argentina captain Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, and Barcelona’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, seen by many as Messi’s potential successor.

UEFA explored several alternative arrangements, but all were rejected by the Argentinian Football Association. Options included holding the match at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu, staging a two-legged tie with games in Spain and Buenos Aires, or hosting a single fixture at a neutral European venue on March 27 or March 30. Argentina could only accommodate a match on March 31, which conflicted with UEFA’s schedule.

“As a result, and with regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” UEFA concluded.
