ICC general manager Wasim Khan preparing to leave position

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will see a key leadership change as its general manager of cricket, Wasim Khan, prepares to step down after serving in the role for four years.

Wasim took over the position in May 2022, succeeding Geoff Allardice, who had moved up to become the ICC’s Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining the global body, Wasim spent nearly three years as CEO of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

From player to administrator

Before transitioning into cricket administration, Wasim had a notable playing career. He made history as the first British-born Muslim cricketer to feature in county cricket, representing teams such as Warwickshire, Sussex, and Derbyshire during the 1990s.

A left-handed batter, he played 58 first-class matches along with 30 List A games. One of his standout achievements came in 1995 when he was part of Warwickshire’s County Championship-winning side, enjoying a prolific season with an average close to 50.

A strong record off the field

After retiring from professional cricket, Wasim built a respected career in sports administration. He served as CEO of Leicestershire County Cricket Club and previously led the Cricket Foundation, where he played a key role in developing the “Chance to Shine” initiative into one of the UK’s most impactful cricket charities.

Key developments during ICC tenure

During his time at the ICC, Wasim navigated a rapidly evolving cricket landscape. One of the biggest challenges was managing an increasingly crowded calendar, with the rise of domestic T20 and T10 leagues putting pressure on international fixtures.

Despite these challenges, the ICC’s Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2023–2027, finalised during his tenure, actually expanded the volume of international cricket. Another milestone was the introduction of the first-ever women’s FTP, marking a significant step forward for the global women’s game.

Leadership changes at ICC

Wasim is expected to conclude his role by the end of June and is set to move into a new position from July. His departure comes amid a broader reshuffle within the ICC’s senior leadership in recent years.

Several high-profile officials have exited, including former CEO Geoff Allardice, who has since been succeeded by Sanjog Gupta. Other changes include Chris Tetley stepping down from his role overseeing events, replaced by Gaurav Saxena, and Alex Marshall leaving the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, with Andrew Ephgrave taking over
