AI Shake-Up: Standard Chartered Set to Cut Over 7,000 Jobs

Standard Chartered has unveiled plans to eliminate more than 7,000 roles over the next four years as part of a major shift toward artificial intelligence and automation.

The London-based bank is among the first global lenders to outline large-scale workforce reductions driven by AI adoption. The move is aimed at streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and strengthening profitability in an increasingly competitive financial landscape.

According to the bank’s latest strategy update released Tuesday (19), around 15% of back-office positions will be phased out by 2030. This translates to approximately 7,800 job cuts from a pool of over 52,000 employees working in such roles.

Standard Chartered currently employs nearly 82,000 people worldwide. CEO Bill Winters stated that the transformation will largely be powered by automation and AI integration, while also creating opportunities for some employees to reskill and transition into new roles.

Back-office hubs in cities such as Chennai, Bengaluru, Kuala Lumpur, and Warsaw are expected to be the most affected by the restructuring.

Winters emphasized that the initiative is not purely about reducing costs but about reallocating resources more effectively. He noted that the bank is replacing lower-value manual roles with investments in technology and capital to drive long-term growth.

The job cuts come as Standard Chartered nears the completion of a decade-long turnaround strategy, which has seen it evolve from a potential takeover target into a more stable and consistently profitable institution.

The bank’s push toward automation mirrors a broader trend across the global financial sector, where institutions are increasingly adopting AI to boost productivity, manage risks, and counter growing cybersecurity threats.

Winters added that artificial intelligence will play a critical role in modernizing the bank’s core systems and enhancing overall operational capabilities.
