Amazon Upgrades Alexa with Smarter, More Conversational AI in the UK
Amazon is rolling out a major artificial intelligence upgrade to its popular Echo smart speakers in the UK, aiming to make its voice assistant Alexa more interactive and responsive.
The new version, called Alexa+, is designed to deliver more natural conversations, allowing users to speak more freely and maintain ongoing dialogue without needing to repeat commands. Amazon says the assistant will also become more proactive, offering suggestions and responses that feel more human-like.
Since its launch in 2016, the Echo has faced growing criticism for falling behind newer AI tools. Platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have raised expectations by making digital interactions smoother and more conversational.
Industry experts say the update could divide opinion. Jessica Miller from CCS Insight noted that while some users may appreciate the more relaxed and friendly tone, others could find the shift unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. However, she added that users in the UK are likely to notice a clear difference when using the upgraded assistant.
Demonstrations have already shown how Alexa+ responds in a more casual and engaging way. For example, instead of giving a straightforward weather update, the assistant now replies with a more conversational tone, making interactions feel less robotic.
Despite earlier criticism such as being labelled little more than a basic household tool Amazon maintains that the Echo remains widely used. The company says more than half of UK consumers have tried the device, with billions of interactions recorded in recent years.
At the same time, competition in the smart home space is intensifying. Google is evolving its own smart devices by integrating Gemini into its home ecosystem, though hardware updates have been less frequent.
Alexa+ will be available as part of a subscription model, priced at £19.99 per month, but offered at no additional cost to Amazon Prime members. Newer Echo devices will support the upgrade immediately, while users with older models will need to register online.
Amazon’s smart speaker division has reportedly struggled to generate consistent profits, with the Echo lineup incurring significant financial losses over the years. The company has also made job cuts within its devices and services division in recent years.
Even so, the new AI upgrade could provide Amazon with a different kind of value. By enabling deeper and more detailed conversations, Alexa+ may help the company better understand user preferences, potentially strengthening its advertising and personalisation capabilities in the future.
