Kenya Celebrates Record-Breaking Marathoner Sebastian Sawe with Hero’s Homecoming

Kenyan marathon sensation Sabastian Sawe was given a hero’s welcome on his return home on Wednesday, with celebrations at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, including a dramatic water cannon salute for the aircraft he travelled on.

The record-breaking athlete, who made global headlines after his extraordinary performance at the London Marathon, was received by family members and Kenya’s Sports Minister Salim Mvurya, who praised his achievement as a proud moment for the nation. Officials hailed Sawe’s success as a major milestone in Kenya’s long-standing dominance in long-distance running.

Sawe stunned the sporting world on Sunday when he completed the marathon in 1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds, becoming the first athlete to break the long-coveted two-hour barrier. His performance also shaved 65 seconds off the previous men’s world record, a feat many once believed was impossible.

Speaking shortly after arriving in Nairobi, Sawe told reporters he felt proud of what he had achieved, describing it as one of the biggest moments of his life. He also expressed ambition to push the limits even further and lower the record again in future competitions.

As part of the celebrations, he was presented with a traditional victory wreath made from twigs, while cultural performers welcomed him with music and dance. He was later escorted in a government vehicle as part of official festivities planned to continue into the following day.

Sawe’s family also shared emotional reactions to his success. His mother recalled his childhood energy, saying his early speed and enthusiasm hinted at his future greatness. His father, who watched the race with relatives due to poor television reception, described the moment Sawe took the lead as overwhelming and unforgettable.

The marathon star was first introduced to competitive running through his uncle, former athlete Abraham Chepkirwok, who competed in the 800 metres at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Sawe’s rise in marathon running has been rapid, including a win at the Valencia Marathon in 2024 with a time of 2:02:05, before defending his reputation at this year’s London Marathon.

Despite his record-breaking performance, Sawe has already set his sights on further improvement, stating that he believes even faster times are possible. His determination signals that his historic achievement may only be the beginning of an even greater athletic journey.
