HSBC Shuts Down Consumer Banking Services in Sri Lanka

Consumer banking operations of HSBC in Sri Lanka officially conclude today (April 30), marking the completion of the transfer of its retail banking portfolio to Nations Trust Bank.

The transition follows regulatory approval granted by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka in December 2025, allowing HSBC to proceed with the divestment of its consumer banking segment. The move is based on a binding agreement signed between the two institutions in September 2025, which has now been fully executed.

Beginning May 1, 2026, around 200,000 HSBC customers—including those with credit cards, personal loans, and premier banking accounts—will be officially onboarded to Nations Trust Bank, completing one of the largest retail banking transitions in the country.

HSBC has informed customers that its branches, express banking centres, and ATM services will cease operations at 3 p.m. today. However, access to accounts, debit and credit cards, and digital banking platforms will remain available until 7 p.m., after which all HSBC-operated services in Sri Lanka will be fully deactivated.

Customers have been advised to make necessary arrangements in advance, as a temporary disruption is expected during the system migration phase. Services will resume once Nations Trust Bank completes the integration and restores access under its platform.

In a farewell message, HSBC also confirmed the closure of its official Sri Lanka social media channels, expressing appreciation to customers for their trust and long-standing relationship. The bank noted it has been a privilege to serve clients in the country and extended its best wishes for the future as customers transition to their new banking provider.
