Students across the United Arab Emirates return to in-person learning amid safety measures

Students across the United Arab Emirates have returned to in-person classes following nearly 50 days of distance learning, which was introduced amid regional tensions linked to the wider geopolitical situation involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

On reopening day, school campuses once again came alive with activity as buses returned to the roads and students stepped back into classrooms. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and emotion—teachers were welcomed with flowers, students received small gifts such as stickers and chocolates, and parents expressed visible relief and happiness as normal school life resumed.

Despite the joyful return, schools implemented strict safety protocols to ensure student well-being. These measures included designated safety zones, the suspension of outdoor activities, closure of school canteens, and regular emergency preparedness drills.

Attendance levels at many schools were reported to be higher than anticipated, reflecting strong demand for a return to face-to-face education. However, the transition was not uniform across all institutions. Some schools opted to extend online learning for an additional week, while early childhood centres and nurseries adopted a gradual phased reopening approach.
