Deadly explosion at firecracker plant in India kills at least 25

At least 25 people have lost their lives following a powerful explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu, while several others sustained injuries, officials confirmed.

The incident took place on Sunday evening at a fireworks facility in Virudhunagar district. Authorities revealed that although the factory was expected to remain closed, around 50 workers were reportedly present inside at the time of the blast.

Emergency teams rushed to the scene as rescue operations began, but efforts were complicated by a second explosion that occurred during the response. This subsequent blast left 13 additional individuals injured, though none suffered critical burns, according to district officials.

The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been determined, and investigations are currently ongoing.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that many workers were gathered near the front section of the building when the fire broke out. The explosion caused severe structural damage, destroying several sections of the factory and leaving debris scattered across the site.

Rescue operations were further hindered as firecrackers continued to ignite within the premises, creating hazardous conditions for emergency responders.

Police have filed a case against the factory owner and a supervisor, both of whom are currently absconding. Special teams have been deployed to locate and apprehend those responsible.

Authorities are also working to identify the victims. Officials confirmed that the majority of those killed were women, and some bodies were severely burned, making identification difficult.

Industrial accidents involving fireworks units are not uncommon in India, where the sector plays a major role in supplying products for festivals and celebrations. However, the industry has frequently come under scrutiny for lapses in safety standards.

Preliminary findings suggest possible regulatory violations. Officials noted that the factory was not permitted to operate on the day of the incident, raising concerns about compliance despite holding a valid licence.

The tragedy has drawn reactions from national leaders. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives, while Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin assured that necessary support would be provided to the victims’ families.

Investigations are continuing as authorities seek to determine the exact circumstances behind the explosion and whether safety violations contributed to the disaster.
