Tom Cruise’s Top Gun re-released in UAE for 40th anniversary

One of Hollywood’s most iconic action classics is set to return to cinemas across the United Arab Emirates as Top Gun (1986) is re-released to mark its 40th anniversary, giving audiences a chance to experience the high-adrenaline aviation drama on the big screen once again.

Originally released in 1986, the film became a global cultural milestone and played a key role in establishing Tom Cruise as an international superstar. Directed by Tony Scott, the movie follows naval aviator Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he joins the elite U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School, known as TOPGUN.

The film is widely remembered for its groundbreaking aerial cinematography, filmed long before modern CGI techniques became standard. Real fighter jets and in-flight sequences were used extensively, with professional pilots operating the aircraft while actors performed cockpit scenes to enhance realism. One notable detail is that some aerial stunt work was linked to Scott Altman, who later became a NASA astronaut.

Production of the film also involved close cooperation with the U.S. military, with the Pentagon reportedly charging Paramount approximately $1.8 million for access to aircraft and naval equipment. This partnership allowed the filmmakers to capture authentic flight sequences that contributed to the film’s lasting impact. Upon release, the movie became one of the highest-grossing films of the 1980s and is also credited with boosting interest in naval aviation careers.

The anniversary re-release is part of global celebrations marking four decades since the film’s original debut in May 1986 in New York. In the UAE, screenings are expected to begin on May 14, with major cinema chains including VOX Cinemas and Roxy Cinemas set to bring the classic back to the big screen.
