Sri Lanka’s iconic 147th Battle of the Blues begins

The 147th edition of the Battle of the Blues between Royal College Colombo and S. Thomas’ College Mt Lavinia one of Colombo’s most iconic social and sporting events begins today (12) at the Singhalese Sports Club (SSC). Over the next three action-packed days, the two schools will compete fiercely for the prestigious D.S. Senanayake Challenge Shield, drawing crowds from across Sri Lanka and the world.

In addition to the traditional multi-day clash, the 49th Mustangs Trophy Limited-Over match will be played as a day-night encounter on March 28 at the same venue.

The Thomians will be captained by Avinash Fernando, while Rehan Peiris leads the Royalists. Both teams are guided by esteemed alumni coaches: Nilanka Peiris Jnr. for S. Thomas’ and Gamini Perera for Royal.

Last year’s encounter is remembered for a bold declaration by Royal that ultimately set the stage for a memorable Thomian victory an iconic moment in the storied history of this gentlemen’s game.

This year, Royal boasts four national youth caps in their squad and retains last year’s skipper Ramiru Perera. In recent encounters, the Royalists have recorded one outright win and four first-innings wins, while the Thomians have one outright victory and six first-innings wins, reflecting the closely matched rivalry that has defined this historic series.

Fans can expect high-quality cricket, thrilling contests, and the pageantry that has made the Battle of the Blues a highlight of Colombo’s sporting calendar for nearly a century and a half.
