Australia has announced a new policy that could see major technology companies including Meta Platforms, Google, and TikTok face significant financial penalties if they fail to reach agreements with local media organisations over news content shared on their platforms.
The government stated on Tuesday that the proposed News Bargaining Incentive would impose a levy of 2.25% on the Australian revenues of these digital giants if they do not negotiate deals to compensate news publishers. The aim is to ensure that platforms contributing to the distribution of news also support the journalism ecosystem that produces it.
Under the plan, the revenue collected from the tax would be channelled directly to Australian news organisations to help strengthen the country’s media industry. Officials argue that the policy is designed to create a fairer digital news market, where tech companies contribute financially to the content they benefit from.
If implemented, the measure would increase pressure on global tech firms operating in Australia to formalise agreements with local publishers, or risk facing multimillion-dollar charges linked to their domestic earnings.
