Sri Lanka Turns to Trincomalee Oil Tanks for Sustainable Energy Solution

Sri Lanka is moving to accelerate the redevelopment of the Trincomalee oil tank farm, positioning it as a long-term answer to the country’s persistent energy challenges. The effort is being supported by both India and the United Arab Emirates.

Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath said the plan focuses on restoring oil storage tanks built during World War II in the eastern region, describing the initiative as a lasting solution to fuel supply issues.

He emphasized that short-term fixes are no longer viable, noting the need for a comprehensive strategy to manage oil storage and distribution in light of ongoing global energy uncertainties.

The renewed push comes after a Memorandum of Understanding signed in April 2025 between Sri Lanka, India, and United Arab Emirates to transform Trincomalee into a regional energy hub.

Although the project has faced delays for decades, rising global fuel prices and supply disruptions have brought fresh urgency to its implementation.

Sri Lanka has already presented a preliminary concept to its partners, while the Energy Ministry is currently reviewing technical details before advancing to the tender phase.

The latest developments also signal a shift in policy, as the current administration led by the National People’s Power had earlier been critical of India’s role in the project.
