Sri Lanka CERT Flags Growing Threat of Festive Season Scams Online

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (Sri Lanka CERT) has issued a public alert today (07), cautioning citizens about a sharp rise in online scams and financial fraud attempts circulating on social media platforms during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.

In a statement, the agency noted that cybercriminals are taking advantage of the festive period—when online activity is especially high—to deceive users and exploit public trust. These scams are often designed to capitalize on the spirit of generosity, urgency, and increased digital engagement associated with the celebrations.

Sri Lanka CERT reports a growing number of complaints involving fraudulent activities where scammers pose as government agencies, public institutions, popular supermarket chains, and well-known businesses. Victims are typically enticed through fake promotions, special discounts, cash rewards, and prize offers shared عبر social media.

Authorities have also observed a rise in scams connected to online “Avurudu Kumari” contests and similar festive campaigns. These schemes are used to collect personal information, including photographs and other sensitive data, from unsuspecting participants.

Additionally, scammers frequently circulate misleading links that prompt users to make payments or reveal confidential details. Several individuals have already reported unauthorized bank transactions and financial losses linked to such deceptive practices.

Sri Lanka CERT is urging the public to remain cautious and follow key safety precautions:

  • Avoid clicking on suspicious or unfamiliar links
  • Do not share personal details such as NIC numbers or banking information on unverified platforms
  • Never disclose banking credentials or One-Time Passwords (OTPs) to unknown parties

The agency stressed that legitimate government bodies and trusted organizations do not request sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited messages, social media posts, or unknown links.

Members of the public are strongly encouraged to verify the authenticity of any online communication, fundraising appeal, or promotional offer through official and reliable sources before taking action. Staying alert and informed is essential to avoid falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated scams.
