The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber-level warning for heightened lightning activity affecting parts of the country, with the advisory in effect until 11.00 p.m. today (07).
According to the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, thundershowers accompanied by intense lightning are expected after 2.00 p.m. in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces. Similar weather conditions are also likely in the districts of Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Mannar, Vavuniya and Mullaitivu.
The warning further highlights the possibility of brief but strong gusty winds during these thundershowers.
Officials have urged the public to remain cautious and take necessary safety precautions to reduce risks. People are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid seeking shelter under trees or remaining in open spaces such as paddy fields, tea estates, and near water bodies.
Residents are also discouraged from using wired telephones or electrical equipment during lightning activity. Travelling in open vehicles—including bicycles, tractors, and boats—should be avoided. Authorities have additionally warned the public to watch out for hazards such as fallen trees and damaged power lines.
An Amber alert signals a moderate level of risk, meaning conditions could pose a threat if precautions are not followed. The public is encouraged to stay alert and contact local disaster management authorities if emergency assistance is required.
