Local Talent Selection Completed for La Bamba – Song of Veracruz by City of Dreams & John Keells Foundation

The search for Sri Lanka’s musical theatre talent for an international stage production has officially wrapped up, with a talented group of children and adults chosen to form the local cast of La Bamba – Song of Veracruz. The production is presented by City of Dreams Sri Lanka in collaboration with the John Keells Foundation.

After a highly competitive round of auditions held earlier this year, aspiring performers were evaluated on their singing, dancing, and acting abilities. The selection process was led by Local Associate Director Kalakeerthi Jerome De Silva and Local Associate Music Director Soundarie David, who assessed each candidate’s versatility, stage presence, confidence, and charisma. The result is a diverse and energetic group of performers set to share the stage with international artists.

The John Keells Foundation, the CSR arm of the John Keells Group, plays a central role in supporting initiatives that promote creativity, cultural engagement, and social unity. Through this partnership, the foundation continues to create opportunities for local artists while expanding access to high-quality performing arts experiences.

Commenting on the collaboration, Head of CSR at John Keells Group, Carmeline Jayasuriya, expressed pride in supporting a production that merges global expertise with local creativity. She highlighted the project as a valuable platform for Sri Lankan performers to develop their skills and gain international exposure while showcasing the country’s artistic potential on a global stage.

The final stage of auditions was attended by West End director Paul Morrissey, founder of the London-based theatre production company Paul Morrissey Ltd and director of La Bamba – Song of Veracruz. He described the production as a celebration of cross-cultural collaboration, noting that it brings together Sri Lankan performers and international talent to create a vibrant and diverse theatrical experience.

Morrissey also emphasized the uniqueness of the initiative, stating that it marks the first time Sri Lanka has licensed a Western production in this manner. He praised the exceptional standard of local talent, particularly among younger performers, and noted the strong vocal abilities demonstrated during auditions. According to him, blending West End theatre with Sri Lankan artistry promises something truly special for audiences.

With auditions now complete, rehearsals have begun, uniting both emerging and experienced performers. The production will gain further momentum when the international cast from London’s West End arrives in Colombo in the coming weeks, marking the next phase of this cultural exchange.

Jerome De Silva highlighted the impressive depth of talent discovered during auditions, noting that the younger participants stood out with their natural star quality. He explained that beyond technical skills, performers were chosen for their ability to combine singing, acting, and dancing with the vibrant personality required for a Latin-inspired musical.

Soundarie David echoed these sentiments, pointing out the natural connection between Sri Lanka’s rhythmic traditions and Latin music. She noted that many performers demonstrated strong energy, confidence, and passion—qualities essential for bringing the production to life.

Members of the selected cast expressed excitement about the opportunity, describing it as a chance to perform on a major stage alongside international artists while showcasing Sri Lankan talent to a global audience. Young performers, in particular, shared their enthusiasm, with one rating their excitement “11 out of 10” and another highlighting a passion for singing despite the challenges it brings.

As rehearsals progress, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a dynamic and memorable theatrical production. Organisers say the fusion of local and international talent will deliver a unique performance experience for audiences in Colombo.

The show will run for a limited period from April 24 to 28 at The Forum, City of Dreams Sri Lanka. Audiences are encouraged to secure tickets early to witness this vibrant blend of West End theatre and Sri Lankan artistry.

La Bamba – Song of Veracruz is presented by City of Dreams Sri Lanka and the John Keells Foundation. Tickets are available via the Cinnamon Box Office and hotline, with early-bird discounts offered for selected cardholders.
