Australia’s long-running food naming debate has fired up again — this time thanks to a clever supermarket move.
A product spotted at Aldi has reignited the age-old argument over what to call a battered, deep-fried slice of potato often found at fish and chip shops. Depending on where you live, it could be a potato cake, potato scallop, or potato fritter.
Aldi’s Bespoke Foods Mini Potato Cakes/Scallops/Fritters ($4.99) took the cheeky route, printing all three names on its packaging. Popular content creator Oh So Busy Mum shared the find on social media, sparking waves of nostalgic and hilarious debate online.
One user joked: “Biggest way to start an argument in a food group.” Another argued that fritters are battered, cakes are desserts, and scallops are seafood — sparking even more confusion.
For many Victorians, it will always be “potato cake,” while New South Wales and Queensland insist on “scallop,” and South and Western Australians are firmly team “fritter.”
Even Aldi stepped in with a diplomatic response:
“We know some Australians call it a potato cake, scallop or fritter, but no matter what you call it, we can agree it’s a crowd-pleaser.”
So, what do you call it — scallop, cake, or fritter?
