“One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson Secures Six Oscars

One Battle After Another, the darkly humorous action thriller directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, won the Academy Award for Best Picture, capping off a highly successful night at the Oscars with a total of six awards.

The film had been widely viewed as a strong contender ahead of the ceremony and ultimately triumphed over several major nominees, including Sinners, Hamnet, Frankenstein and The Secret Agent. It entered the awards night with 13 nominations, the second-highest number this year, while Sinners topped the list with a record 16 nominations.

The story unfolds in an authoritarian version of the United States, where Leonardo DiCaprio plays a revolutionary figure whose complicated past returns to haunt him when his daughter goes missing. The film also features a star-studded cast including Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti.

Following the Best Picture announcement, the cast celebrated enthusiastically on stage, sharing hugs and dancing as the audience applauded. During his acceptance speech, Anderson spoke about the unpredictable nature of awards recognition. He referenced the memorable group of nominees from 1975 and noted that choosing a “best” film often depends on the mood of the moment. He also thanked fellow filmmakers and said it had been an outstanding year for cinema.

Earlier in the evening, Anderson had also won Best Director and jokingly admitted during the Best Picture speech that he had forgotten to thank his cast while accepting that award. Laughing, he added, “What a night — let’s have a martini.”

The win represents a major achievement for Anderson, who had received 14 Oscar nominations before this year and had previously been nominated for Best Picture three times.
