Dubai Introduces AI-Driven Beach Rescue System

Dubai Municipality has introduced an advanced beach safety programme featuring aquatic rescue robots and aerial water-rescue drones, reinforcing Dubai’s growing reputation as a pioneer in smart coastal safety solutions.

The project the first of its kind in the region highlights the city’s shift towards artificial intelligence-driven technologies aimed at improving swimmer safety, accelerating emergency response times and enhancing the beach experience throughout the year.

Robots that reach swimmers faster

A key component of the system is an aquatic rescue robot, the first device of its type to be deployed in the Middle East. The remote-controlled, self-propelled robot can reach swimmers in difficulty up to five times faster than a lifeguard. It can travel as far as one kilometre from shore and is capable of towing loads of up to 500 kilograms, enabling rescuers to assist people in distress while minimising risks to lifeguards during rough sea conditions.

The system also incorporates specialised water-rescue drones, sometimes referred to as “flying lifebuoys.” These drones can be quickly launched over the sea, land on the water’s surface and provide flotation support to individuals in danger. Equipped with live video cameras, they deliver real-time footage that helps lifeguards quickly identify incidents, evaluate risks and coordinate rescue efforts more efficiently.

Integrated safety strategy

The robots and drones operate as part of a coordinated safety network that includes trained lifeguards, continuous monitoring systems and centralised operational control. By combining aerial and water-based rescue technology, the initiative enables authorities to respond rapidly across large coastal areas, particularly during complex or urgent emergencies, while setting new international standards for beach safety.

Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the technology-driven system strengthens protection for beach visitors while also improving the safety of lifeguards.

He noted that the initiative reflects Dubai’s continued commitment to innovation and artificial intelligence to enhance quality of life. According to Anwahi, the long-term goal is to ensure Dubai’s beaches become a global benchmark for safety, preparedness and visitor confidence through ongoing investment in smart rescue technologies and safety infrastructure.
