World No. 2 Jannik Sinner kicked off his Miami Open campaign on a strong note Saturday, while defending champion Jakub Mensik overcame a shaky start to claim his opening-round win. Just six days after securing the Indian Wells title, Sinner advanced confidently with a 6-3, 6-3 win over 76th-ranked Damir Dzumhur, aiming to complete the coveted “Sunshine Double.”
“First-round matches are always tricky,” noted the 24-year-old Italian, who triumphed at Miami in 2024. Following his victory over Daniil Medvedev at Indian Wells, Sinner is now attempting to become the first player since Roger Federer in 2017 to claim both Indian Wells and Miami ATP Masters 1000 crowns in the same season.
Sinner wrapped up the opening set in just 34 minutes and took an early 2-1 lead in the second before converting match point with a backhand winner. “I tried to be aggressive from the start, going for the early break,” he said. “Sometimes it worked well, sometimes I made a few errors, but I had little time to adapt. Miami feels very different from Indian Wells.”
Medvedev also faced adjustment challenges but managed to overcome 19-year-old Japanese wildcard Rei Sakamoto, winning 6-7 (10/12), 6-3, 6-1.
Mensik, who exited in the third round at Indian Wells, struggled with lingering illness and the pressure of defending his title. After dropping the first set 3-6 against Australian Adam Walton, he bounced back to take the next two sets 6-2, 6-4. “My first set was terrible,” admitted the Czech player. “But I focused on my game, stayed mentally tough, and managed to get back into rhythm despite the pressure.”
Other notable results included fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev advancing comfortably to the third round with a 6-2, 6-4 win over 133rd-ranked American Martin Damm. Meanwhile, eighth-seeded American Ben Shelton was eliminated by Kazakhstan’s Alexander Shevchenko, 6-7 (3/7), 7-6 (7/3), 6-3.
