Mastercard expands Sri Lanka’s digital payment ecosystem with key initiatives

Mastercard has launched two innovative payment solutions in Sri Lanka Soundbox and Cloud Commerce aimed at making digital transactions simpler, faster, and more affordable for small businesses.

Unveiled at the recent Access Unlocked Summit, the initiatives reflect Mastercard’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s digital payments ecosystem and help more merchants confidently adopt cashless transactions.

Developed in partnership with Ceylon Business Appliances, Commercial Bank of Ceylon, Payable Pvt Ltd, and Hatton National Bank, the Soundbox device is a first-of-its-kind solution in Sri Lanka. It enables merchants to accept multiple payment methods—including QR and card payments through a single compact device.

The system provides instant audio confirmation for every successful transaction, allowing shop owners to verify payments in real time while maintaining smooth checkout operations. Designed for ease of use and efficiency, Soundbox helps reduce reliance on multiple machines and lowers operational complexity.

With pricing set significantly below traditional POS systems, the solution is expected to encourage wider adoption among small and medium-sized businesses that previously faced cost barriers to digital payment infrastructure.

In a separate launch, Mastercard and Payable Pvt Ltd, together with Commercial Bank of Ceylon, introduced Cloud Commerce, a software-based payment solution demonstrated live at the event. It turns any NFC-enabled smartphone into a secure payment terminal, eliminating the need for dedicated hardware.

Cloud Commerce supports Tap & Go card payments and QR transactions, making it particularly useful for mobile vendors and businesses operating in fast-moving environments. The platform also includes multi-language support and digital transaction tracking to improve efficiency and record-keeping.

Together, these two innovations mark a significant step in expanding financial inclusion and accelerating Sri Lanka’s transition toward a more accessible digital payments landscape.
