Sri Lankan fast bowler Eshan Malinga is emerging as one of the leading wicket-takers in the ongoing Indian Premier League, with an impressive tally of 12 wickets so far in the tournament.
Malinga delivered a standout performance in his latest outing against Delhi Capitals, claiming four wickets for 32 runs in his full quota of four overs. Notably, he played a crucial role during the latter half of the innings, bowling three of his overs in the final 10 overs to apply pressure and break key partnerships.
Earlier in the match, Sunrisers Hyderabad set a daunting target after being asked to bat first. The innings was powered by a sensational knock from opener Abhishek Sharma, who smashed 135 runs off just 68 deliveries, featuring 10 boundaries and 10 sixes at a remarkable strike rate.
He received strong support from Heinrich Klaasen, whose quickfire 37 off 13 balls added valuable momentum towards the end of the innings.
Delhi Capitals’ bowling attack struggled to contain the run flow, with skipper Axar Patel being the only bowler to claim a wicket. Meanwhile, Lungi Ngidi went wicketless, conceding heavily, while Mukesh Kumar and Nitish Rana were also expensive.
Chasing a massive total, Delhi Capitals showed brief promise through a partnership between KL Rahul and Nitish Rana. Rana played an aggressive innings, scoring 57 off 30 balls, while Rahul added 37 runs from 23 deliveries. However, the required run rate proved too steep, and wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka was unable to make an impact, departing early for just eight runs. Sameer Rizvi showed intent with a fighting 41 but could not carry the chase through.
Malinga was the standout bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad, dismissing key batters including Nitish Rana, David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma. He came close to achieving a hat-trick after striking in consecutive deliveries to remove Rana and Miller.
Support came from Harsh Dubey, who impressed with three wickets for just 12 runs in a short spell. Meanwhile, fellow Sri Lankan pacer Dilshan Madushanka made his IPL debut, picking up one wicket.
The match also marked a notable moment for Sri Lankan cricket, as three players from the island featured in a single IPL game for the first time in nearly 15 years.
With Sri Lankan players delivering strong performances on one of cricket’s biggest stages, fans will be hoping this momentum continues throughout the tournament.
