Veteran investor Mark Mobius dies at 89, leaving global legacy

Veteran global investor Mark Mobius, widely recognised as a pioneer in emerging and frontier market investing, has died at the age of 89.

Mobius was instrumental in shifting global investor focus toward developing economies, including markets such as Sri Lanka, at a time when these regions were often overlooked by mainstream finance.

During his long career at Franklin Templeton, he helped launch one of the industry’s earliest emerging market-focused funds. Under his leadership, the Templeton Emerging Markets Investment Trust expanded significantly, reflecting growing international interest in higher-risk developing markets.

Known for his active, on-the-ground investment style, Mobius travelled extensively across Asia, Africa, and other regions in search of undervalued opportunities. His approach played a key role in reshaping how global investors assessed emerging economies, including countries like Sri Lanka.

After leaving Franklin Templeton in 2018, he went on to co-found Mobius Capital Partners, continuing his focus on frontier and emerging markets.

Industry figures have credited Mobius with transforming global perceptions of risk and opportunity in developing markets. His influence is widely regarded as long-lasting, with many expecting his investment philosophy to continue shaping future generations of investors.
