A new dedicated low-floor bus service designed for persons with disabilities will officially begin operations tomorrow (21) from the Makumbura Multimodal Centre, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development has announced.
The initiative is part of the government’s broader commitment to improving equal access to public transport and promoting dignity and inclusivity under the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme. A total investment of Rs. 430 million has been allocated for the project.
According to Sri Lanka Metro Transit Ltd. Chief Operating Officer Chanuka Jayanga, the first phase of the project will introduce 10 modern, air-conditioned low-floor buses. These vehicles are specially designed to ensure easy boarding and safe travel for wheelchair users and persons with mobility challenges.
Each bus has a capacity of around 80 passengers, including 33 seated passengers, and is fitted with dedicated safety and accessibility features.
The initial routes will operate between Makumbura, Pettah, and Kadawatha, with stops near major healthcare institutions such as the Maharagama Apeksha Hospital and the National Hospital in Colombo, improving access for patients and caregivers.
To support smooth operations, 28 Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) drivers have undergone specialized training to handle the new accessible fleet, ensuring safety and comfort for all commuters.
Officials say the service marks a significant step toward building a more inclusive and accessible public transport system in Sri Lanka.
