More than 100 people have been killed after powerful dust storms, heavy rainfall, and lightning strikes swept across India’s most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, leaving widespread destruction in their wake.
According to reports from international and local media outlets including Reuters, AP, and NDTV, the violent weather system struck on Wednesday evening, turning the sky dark with dust and unleashing strong winds that destroyed homes, uprooted trees, and damaged critical infrastructure.
Widespread Destruction Across Multiple Districts
Authorities confirmed that at least 100 people lost their lives, while over 50 others were injured in incidents linked to lightning strikes, collapsing structures, flying debris, and storm-related accidents.
Significant damage was reported across several districts. Prayagraj recorded the highest number of fatalities with 21 deaths, followed by Bhadohi with 18 and Mirzapur with 15. Other heavily affected areas included Fatehpur, Unnao, Badaun, and Pratapgarh.
In addition to human casualties, livestock losses were reported along with extensive damage to homes, crops, electricity poles, and transport infrastructure.

Homes Flattened, Roads Blocked, Infrastructure Damaged
Eyewitness accounts and widely circulated videos showed scenes of devastation across both rural and urban areas. Roads were blocked by fallen trees, railway tracks were damaged, and buildings collapsed under the force of the storm.

In one striking incident in Bareilly, strong winds reportedly lifted a man along with a tin shed, throwing him nearly 50 feet away into an open field. The victim, identified as Nanhe Miyan, suffered multiple fractures to his arms and legs.
Panic as Visibility Drops to Zero
Residents described moments of chaos as the storm rapidly intensified. Many said dust clouds reduced visibility to near zero, making it difficult to move or seek shelter as powerful winds tore through communities.
Authorities continue to assess the full scale of the damage as rescue and recovery efforts are underway.
