The National War Heroes’ Day commemoration is scheduled to take place on May 19 at 3:00 p.m. at the War Heroes’ Memorial in Battaramulla, under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The annual event honours members of the armed forces and security services who sacrificed their lives for the country’s freedom and sovereignty.
Ceremony Details and Participation
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Government Information Department on May 14, Brigadier (Retired) S.B. Kohona, Chairman of the Ranaviru Seva Authority, said the ceremony will follow traditional observances while also introducing several special arrangements this year.
He noted that greater emphasis has been placed on enabling participation from war heroes and families of fallen service members. In addition, Tamil and Muslim war heroes from the Northern and Eastern provinces, along with their families, have been invited to attend.
Large-Scale Attendance Expected
Ranaviru Seva Authority Director L.M.C.B. Nishshanka stated that approximately 2,769 attendees are expected at the event. This includes personnel from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Special Task Force, Civil Security Department, National Cadet Corps, and the Ranaviru Seva Authority, as well as families of war heroes.
He further added that 160 parents of fallen heroes will be given the opportunity to visit the memorial and lay floral tributes, alongside invited guests.
Tribute to Fallen Heroes
The ceremony will serve as a national moment of remembrance, paying respect to those who lost their lives in service to the country. Special arrangements have been made to ensure families of fallen heroes can participate meaningfully in the commemorative proceedings.
