Hambantota Port Boosts Capacity to Meet Rising Middle East Shipping Demand

Hambantota International Port (HIP) has expanded its operational capacity to cope with a sharp rise in global shipping traffic, triggered by ongoing disruptions in the Middle East.

The port’s strategic location, just 10 nautical miles from the main East-West shipping corridor, makes it an attractive alternative for vessels seeking minimal deviations while maintaining schedules. Officials say this prime positioning has contributed significantly to the surge in port activity.

To accommodate the growing demand, HIP has doubled its Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) yard capacity and increased its container yard space by 30%. This expansion comes as major shipping lines reroute operations from affected Middle Eastern routes to more stable and efficient transshipment points.

The surge in container and vehicle transshipments has pushed yard utilization to record highs, underscoring both the scale of global supply chain disruptions and HIP’s rising importance in international maritime trade. The new yard developments allow the port to handle increased throughput efficiently, while minimizing congestion. Executing such rapid expansion within an active port environment posed significant operational and technical challenges, which were overcome through coordinated efforts across management, engineering, and operational teams.

Industry analysts note that the Middle East conflict has caused global shipping patterns to shift, with carriers seeking safer and cost-effective alternatives in the Indian Ocean. HIP CEO Wilson Qu highlighted that the port’s agility and ability to scale quickly have positioned it to meet this evolving demand. He stressed that ongoing investments in infrastructure and operational capabilities will further strengthen Hambantota’s role as a regional logistics and transshipment hub.

This expansion marks another milestone in HIP’s evolution as a resilient maritime platform in the Indian Ocean, strategically poised to capture a larger share of regional transshipment traffic while supporting the stability of global supply chains amidst geopolitical uncertainties.
