Sri Lanka’s Young Innovators Shine on International Robotics Stage

A new wave of digital pioneers is emerging from Sri Lanka’s classrooms as the nation’s robotics scene accelerates. The 2026 World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Sri Lanka Nationals saw participation more than double, with over 500 young innovators gathering in Colombo to display their technical expertise. From autonomous navigation projects to sustainable technology solutions, these students are proving that Sri Lanka is actively shaping the global tech landscape. The top teams now earn the chance to represent the country at the World Finals in Puerto Rico, raising the stakes for these young engineers.

The competition, hosted by Burhani Serendib School, brought together some of the nation’s brightest minds and showcased the growing importance of robotics and STEM education. Organized under the guidance of the Dawoodi Bohra Community, the event reflects a long-standing commitment to delivering world-class education rooted in cultural and ethical values, a vision established by the late 52nd Dai al-Mutlaq, Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, and continued by the 53rd Dai al-Mutlaq, Syedna Mufaddal Saifuddin.

Highlighting the event’s significance, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya attended the finals, applauding the students’ creativity, critical thinking, and technological prowess. She emphasized that platforms like WRO play a vital role in preparing the next generation for a rapidly evolving world.

This year’s competition stood out for its innovation and technical sophistication. Many teams integrated artificial intelligence, automation, and advanced robotics into their projects, demonstrating practical applications for real-world problems. Aligning with the 2026 theme, “Robots Meet Culture,” students explored how robotics can preserve heritage, enhance storytelling, and link technology with cultural identity.

Compared to previous editions, the 2026 Nationals showed marked improvement in problem-solving skills, technical expertise, and presentation abilities. The event also highlighted Sri Lanka’s growing recognition in the global robotics arena, reinforcing the country’s position as a rising hub for STEM talent.

The teams selected for the international stage include VisionX CT (The Lyceum Academy), MechRE (Gateway College Negombo), TecCode (Gateway College Dehiwala), Team F (The Lyceum Academy), and Syncro Rise (Leeds International School Matara). These teams now begin rigorous preparation for the WRO International Finals and other global competitions, supported by Burhani Serendib School through mentorship and training.

For the students, the experience goes beyond competition. Robotics provides a platform to experiment, develop resilience, and acquire critical skills for the future. Through persistence, creativity, and innovation, Sri Lanka’s young engineers are steadily carving out a global presence, demonstrating that the country is ready to compete and succeed on the international robotics stage.
