During the Easter Vigil service, Archbishop of Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, delivered a pointed critique directed at US President Donald Trump, highlighting the global consequences of decisions driven by personal ambition. He remarked that much of the world is suffering due to the actions of a single leader intent on dominating others.
Cardinal Ranjith questioned whether such figures could truly be considered Christians given the devastation they cause. “A leader of a major nation is dropping bombs and creating widespread destruction, yet claims to follow Christianity. True Christians cannot act in such a manner,” he said.
Emphasizing the principles of Christian leadership, the Cardinal noted that leaders are meant to serve their people rather than pursue personal power. “Christian values call for love, compassion, and working for the good of others. Leaders should not be driven by ego, materialism, or greed. History has shown us the fate of those who sought unchecked power, like Adolf Hitler,” he added.
He concluded by urging the Catholic community in Sri Lanka to pray for peace, asking God to influence the hearts of those driven by ambition. “Let us pray that the mindset of this power-hungry leader may be transformed,” Cardinal Ranjith said.
