Alexandra Eala advanced to the round of 16 at the Indian Wells tournament on Sunday after world No. 4 Coco Gauff retired from their third-round match due to an arm injury.
The 20-year-old Filipina was leading 6-2, 2-0 when Gauff, who had received treatment on her left arm during a late injury timeout, decided to withdraw. A trainer had worked on Gauff’s shoulder and forearm after the first set, but the discomfort persisted, forcing her to concede after losing her serve in the second set.
“I really didn’t want to win this way,” Eala said. “But playing on Stadium One at Indian Wells against such a top competitor is a huge moment for me.” She also wished Gauff a swift recovery.
Eala is set to face Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic for a spot in the quarter-finals.
