Actor Nicholas Brendon, best known for his role as Xander Harris on the iconic 1990s series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has passed away at the age of 54. The news was confirmed via a post on Brendon’s verified Instagram account and shared with The Hollywood Reporter.
“Many fans know Nicky for his work on screen, but he also had a deep love for painting and art,” the statement read. “He shared his creativity and passion generously with family, friends, and fans. Those who knew him well recognized his art as a true reflection of his heart and spirit.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, earning Brendon widespread acclaim for his portrayal of the witty and loyal Xander Harris.
Brendon faced personal struggles throughout his life. He voluntarily entered rehab for alcohol issues in 2004 and faced further challenges in 2010, 2014, and 2015, including multiple arrests and treatment for depression, substance abuse, and alcohol dependency. In 2017, he was arrested following an alleged altercation in a California hotel.
His health issues also made headlines in recent years. In 2021, Brendon underwent multiple surgeries for spinal paralysis, and in 2022, he experienced a cardiac event related to tachycardia and arrhythmia.
Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Actress Alyson Hannigan, who played Willow on Buffy, shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, calling him “Sweet Nicky” and thanking him for “years of laughter, love, and Dodgers.”
Beyond Buffy, Brendon appeared in films such as Psycho Beach Party (2000) and Coherence (2013), the latter alongside his identical twin brother, Kelly Donovan.
Brendon’s passing comes just over a year after the death of fellow Buffy alum Michelle Trachtenberg, marking a difficult period for fans of the beloved series.
