Private Security Officer Remanded for Allegedly Filming Chief Justice’s Vehicle in Colombo

A private security officer accused of illegally video recording the vehicle of Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena was ordered to be remanded until September 10 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today.

According to police, the incident occurred when the Chief Justice, accompanied by his security convoy, visited his residence on Gregory’s Road in Colombo and was returning. Investigators from the Cinnamon Gardens Police said the suspect was seen filming the Chief Justice’s vehicle and security convoy using his mobile phone.

The Chief Justice’s security officers apprehended the individual and handed him over to the Cinnamon Gardens Police.

Police further requested the court to hand over the mobile phone to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to examine whether the footage had been shared with third parties and to determine the motive.

The court was also informed that a psychiatric report on the suspect should be submitted by prison authorities.

During proceedings, the suspect’s lawyer claimed that his client recorded the convoy on instructions from his employer and had no criminal intent. The defence requested bail, but the Magistrate rejected the request, ordering the suspect to remain in remand custody until September 10.
