Fatal Crash in Sydney’s Royal National Park Leaves Two Drivers in Custody

Two drivers are in police custody following a fatal incident in which a passenger became trapped and died after a vehicle entered the water in Sydney’s Royal National Park.

The crash is believed to have occurred around 1:15 a.m. at Audley Weir in the Sutherland Shire, where a vehicle reportedly veered off the road and ended up submerged in the water.

The 20-year-old driver of a blue Audi managed to escape the sinking car and was later taken to hospital for mandatory testing. He has since been discharged and taken into custody at Sutherland Police Station.

A 20-year-old passenger, however, was unable to escape the vehicle. His body was recovered later in the morning during a coordinated multi-agency search, along with the submerged car.

In a separate development, police confirmed that a silver Mercedes has been seized as part of the investigation, and its 18-year-old driver is also being held in custody. Authorities stated that a passenger from the second vehicle is assisting police voluntarily by providing information regarding the incident.

Senior Sergeant Steven Planinic said there is currently no indication that the two vehicles made contact prior to the crash. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, and charges may be considered for both drivers as inquiries progress.
