Government Urged to Set Clear Rules as Work-From-Home Debate Grows

The government is facing increasing pressure to clarify its position on working from home (WFH) as the ongoing fuel crisis continues to impact households and businesses, with experts divided on the issue.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is set to convene a national cabinet meeting with state premiers today to discuss potential emergency measures in response to rising fuel costs. One expert has warned that employers would be “out of touch” if they resist flexible work arrangements under current conditions.

State leaders have urged a coordinated national strategy should the crisis escalate further. Measures under consideration at Monday’s meeting include encouraging voluntary remote work where practical, offering public transport incentives, and promoting carpooling initiatives.

Although the government has indicated that such measures are not yet necessary, leadership expert Graeme Cowan believes businesses should already be supporting employees who wish to work from home.

“Companies would be unwise to oppose working from home during a period of rising fuel and living costs,” Cowan said. “Such resistance can signal a lack of trust and disregard for the financial pressures employees are facing.”

He added that how organisations respond during challenging times often speaks louder than their policies, with strong leadership defined by empathy and adaptability.

He said that once fuel prices return to normal levels then employers can switch back to the “pre-crisis” way of operating.

Mr Cowan said it isn’t only “good sense” for employers to be choosing flexibility during the current situation, it is also an “act of care” that staff will remember long after the crisis ends.

Despite this, many Aussie office workers have said they would be shocked if their employer decided to loosen in-office requirements without being forced to do so.
