The travel documentary “Welcome to Sri Lanka”, directed by Mark Julian Edwards, has secured a major international honour, winning the Television Broadcast of the Year title at the Inspire Global Media Awards 2026. The competition featured strong global contenders, including productions associated with the BBC and Amazon TV.
The awards ceremony, held recently in London, United Kingdom, brought together leading figures from the global media industry. According to Sri Lanka Tourism, the achievement marks a significant moment for Sri Lanka’s presence on the international storytelling stage.
The documentary stood out among a highly competitive field of entries, with judges praising its authentic portrayal of human experiences and destination-focused storytelling.
Speaking about the project, director Mark Julian Edwards described his filming experience in Sri Lanka as deeply enriching. He highlighted the island’s diverse wildlife, cultural heritage, traditional cuisine, and scenic landscapes, noting that the warmth and hospitality of the Sri Lankan people left a lasting impression.
He added that the documentary captured everything from ancient culinary traditions and medicinal recipes to vibrant local communities, crafts, and cultural practices, all of which contributed to a powerful storytelling experience.
The film was developed following a media familiarisation tour organised by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, which hosted Edwards and a group of international journalists. The tour took participants across multiple regions of Sri Lanka, offering immersive experiences in local culture, nature, and community life.
Sri Lanka Tourism stated that the award reflects the power of storytelling in showcasing destinations through genuine human connections. The documentary has helped position Sri Lanka on the global tourism map, highlighting its cultural richness, natural beauty, and unique traditions.
Officials added that the recognition reinforces Sri Lanka’s image as a compelling travel destination, where storytelling and authentic experiences come together to inspire global audiences.
