The United States Department of Defense has confirmed that a US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean. Speaking about the incident, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that the vessel “believed it was safe in international waters, but was struck and sunk by a torpedo.”
Hegseth did not specify the name of the Iranian ship involved in the operation.
Earlier reports from the Sri Lankan Navy indicated that the IRIS Dena, an Iranian naval vessel, had gone down in the Indian Ocean. According to the Navy, approximately 140 personnel were on board at the time and are now reported missing.
The incident marks a significant escalation in regional naval tensions and is expected to draw close international attention, given the strategic importance of the Indian Ocean for maritime trade and military movements. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as search and rescue efforts are coordinated for the missing crew members.
