Trump ally pushes for Italy to replace Iran in FIFA World Cup

An envoy linked to former US President Donald Trump has reportedly urged football’s governing body FIFA to consider replacing Iran with Italy in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, according to a report by the Financial Times.

The proposal is said to be part of a broader diplomatic effort aimed at easing tensions between Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, following reported disagreements linked to comments made during discussions around the Iran conflict.

US special envoy Paolo Zampolli was quoted as telling the Financial Times that he had suggested to Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino that Italy should take Iran’s place in the tournament.

He argued that Italy, a four-time World Cup champion, deserves inclusion based on its football legacy and expressed personal enthusiasm at the possibility of seeing the national team compete in a US-hosted tournament.

According to the report, the White House, FIFA, the Italian Football Federation (Italian Football Federation), and Iran’s football federation (Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran) have not responded to requests for comment.

Italy, however, recently suffered a major setback after failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time, following a shock playoff defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina in March.

Meanwhile, Iranian officials reportedly said they remain prepared for the tournament and intend to participate, although earlier statements indicated that participation decisions would depend on FIFA’s response regarding match venue concerns.

The situation remains unclear as official confirmations from all parties are still pending.
