UK and France Reach Three-Year Agreement to Curb Migrant Crossings

United Kingdom and France have agreed on a new three-year strategy aimed at reducing irregular migrant crossings across the English Channel, according to a policy roadmap released by French authorities.

As part of the agreement, France will significantly boost its coastal enforcement presence, with plans to increase the number of officers tackling illegal migration to around 1,400 by 2029. The move is intended to disrupt smuggling operations and prevent dangerous small-boat journeys toward Britain.

The updated arrangement builds on the existing Sandhurst Treaty, which outlines the UK’s financial support for French border control efforts. London has pushed for stricter oversight on how its funding is used, amid long-standing concerns that more needs to be done to stop departures from French shores.

Under the revised terms, financial contributions will be linked to performance. If agreed targets are not met based on annual evaluations, funding could be redirected toward alternative measures. Despite these conditions, the UK’s base contribution will rise to €580 million, marking an increase from previous agreements.

Officials from both countries are expected to provide further details of the plan, including enhanced use of surveillance tools such as drones, helicopters, and digital monitoring systems to detect and prevent crossings before they begin.

The agreement comes at a time of heightened political pressure on UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, with migration remaining a central issue in domestic politics. Efforts are expected to intensify during the summer months, traditionally the peak period for Channel crossings.

Recent data shows that over 41,000 migrants reached the UK via small boats in 2025, making it one of the highest yearly totals recorded. Tragically, dozens of lives have also been lost at sea, highlighting the urgency of coordinated action.

French authorities report that increased enforcement has already led to a drop in arrivals in early 2026, alongside hundreds of arrests linked to human smuggling networks.

The renewed partnership underscores a joint commitment by both nations to strengthen border security, combat organised migration crime, and reduce the risks faced by migrants attempting the perilous journey.
