A UK government-backed trial will test limits on social media use among teenagers, with around 300 participants experiencing different restrictions at home. These include full app bans, overnight shutdowns, or daily time caps, while another group will remain unchanged for comparison.
Led under the guidance of Liz Kendall, the initiative aims to gather real-world evidence on how such measures affect young people’s routines, wellbeing, and family life. Interviews before and after the trial will help assess the impact.
The pilot runs alongside a wider consultation on whether the United Kingdom should introduce stricter laws on youth access to social platforms, similar to moves seen in Australia. While some groups support tougher action, others warn restrictions may be difficult to enforce or push teens toward less regulated online spaces.
