UK to deploy four additional Typhoon jets to Qatar, says PM Starmer

Keir Starmer announced on Thursday that the United Kingdom will deploy four additional Eurofighter Typhoon jets to Qatar as tensions continue to escalate in the Middle East.

Speaking during a press briefing, Starmer said the move is part of Britain’s broader effort to reinforce its defensive posture in the region. He stressed that the UK has already taken steps to position military equipment across the Middle East ahead of the conflict, describing the government’s strategy as the correct approach to national defence.

Britain’s measured reaction to the crisis involving Iran, as well as a drone attack targeting a major British military installation in Cyprus, has raised concerns among some allies about the country’s military response.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump has criticised Starmer for what he described as insufficient backing for U.S. military strikes against Iran.

Addressing the criticism, Starmer said his priority is to provide calm and responsible leadership while acting in Britain’s national interest. He emphasised that the government is utilising both military and diplomatic resources to safeguard its citizens while continuing to stand by its principles despite external pressure.

The additional Typhoon fighter jets will join the existing squadron stationed in Qatar, strengthening defensive operations in the country and across the wider region, Starmer added.
