U.S. Defeats Canada in Women’s Hockey Final to Win 2026 Olympic Gold

The United States defeated Canada 2–1 in overtime to claim the gold medal in the women’s ice hockey final at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, marking another dramatic chapter in one of the fiercest rivalries in Olympic sport.

The American women’s hockey team secured the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics after a thrilling 2–1 overtime victory against Canada. The match, played in Milan, showcased intense competition, high skill, and the growing global appeal of women’s ice hockey.

Canada opened the scoring early in the second period when Kristin O’Neill scored on a short-handed breakaway. However, the United States equalised late in the third period when Hilary Knight scored with less than three minutes remaining. The decisive goal came in overtime from Megan Keller, sealing victory for the Americans.

This loss marks Canada’s eighth consecutive defeat against the United States and adds to the long-standing rivalry between the two nations, which have dominated women’s Olympic hockey since its introduction in 1998. Canada previously defeated the U.S. 3–2 to win gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, but the 2026 result saw the Americans reclaim the top spot.

With this silver medal, Canada has now collected 15 medals at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics. Historically, Canada and the U.S. have faced each other in seven of the last eight Olympic gold medal games, with each final since 2006 decided by just one goal, highlighting the competitiveness of their rivalry.

The 2026 final was also significant as the first Olympic gold medal match since the launch of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Experts believe the league has played a key role in raising the standard of women’s hockey globally. Sport business professor Cheri Bradish noted that while the PWHL is primarily a North American league, the Olympics provide an important platform to expand its global reach.

The PWHL has seen record attendance, with more than 154,000 fans attending its first 16 games and over one million total attendees since its launch. Many PWHL players participated in the Olympics, with 39 players appearing in the gold medal match, demonstrating the league’s influence on elite women’s hockey.

Experts and league officials have described the future of women’s hockey as promising, citing increased professionalism, talent, and financial investment. Jayna Hefford, PWHL executive vice-president of hockey operations, stated that the Olympics have helped attract new fans and that the league aims to maintain this momentum by offering year-round access to world-class athletes.
