Donald Trump declares 14-day ceasefire agreement with Iran

Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (April 7) that the United States had reached a provisional two-week ceasefire understanding with Iran, just under two hours before a deadline he had set for Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or risk major strikes targeting civilian infrastructure.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council later confirmed that it had also agreed to the temporary halt in hostilities.

The announcement, made via Trump’s social media platform, marked a shift in tone after earlier warnings in which he threatened severe consequences if Iran failed to comply, including a stark statement suggesting catastrophic destruction.

According to Trump, the ceasefire is conditional on Iran lifting its blockade of oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route responsible for transporting roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply.

Describing the arrangement as mutual, Trump stated that both sides had already achieved their key military goals and were making significant progress toward a broader, long-term peace agreement for Iran and the wider Middle East.

He also revealed that Iran had submitted a 10-point proposal, which he described as a practical foundation for further negotiations, expressing confidence that a more comprehensive deal could be finalized during the two-week pause.

Trump added that discussions leading to the ceasefire involved Shehbaz Sharif and Asim Munir, who he said urged the United States to delay planned military action against Iran.

He reiterated that the agreement depends on Iran ensuring the immediate and secure reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, shortly after the ceasefire announcement, Israel reported incoming missile fire from Iran. The Israeli military said its defence systems were activated to intercept the threat and issued alerts urging residents in affected areas to move to shelters.

Explosions were reportedly heard in Jerusalem and Jericho, according to witnesses, as tensions remained high despite the ceasefire development.
