Donald Trump plans to add his image to select US passports

The administration of Donald Trump is set to introduce a limited-edition United States passport featuring the president’s image, marking a significant departure from longstanding design traditions.

According to officials, the United States Department of State plans to release the special passport to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence. The edition will include a page displaying Trump’s official portrait superimposed over the historic document, along with his signature in gold. Another page will feature a classic painting of the nation’s founding fathers.

A spokesperson confirmed that the commemorative passports will be issued in limited numbers, primarily in Washington, and will be available at no additional cost while supplies last. However, it remains unclear whether applicants will have the option to decline the special edition.

The move has drawn attention as it breaks with global norms, where passports typically feature national symbols, historical figures, or landmarks rather than images of sitting political leaders. Current US passports include depictions of key historical moments, such as the Moon landing, and iconic landmarks like the Statue of Liberty.

Since returning to office, Trump has taken several steps to incorporate his name and image into official spaces, including government buildings and institutions. In a related development, the Treasury Department has also indicated that his signature is expected to appear on US currency in the near future.

The decision contrasts with practices in countries like the United Kingdom, where currency features King Charles III, a ceremonial head of state who does not play a direct political role.

The introduction of these passports is expected to spark debate over the role of personal imagery in official government documents and the evolving norms of political representation in the United States.
