Sri Lanka Cricket has reportedly introduced a revised national player contract system, featuring enhanced performance-based incentives alongside penalties for series defeats across all formats, as part of a renewed push towards improved results under head coach Gary Kirsten.
The updated structure includes a revamped bonus model aimed at rewarding strong performances, particularly series victories against top-ranked international sides in Test cricket. The system is designed to place greater emphasis on consistency and winning outcomes, with different incentive levels applied depending on format and playing conditions.
Under the new framework, overseas ODI victories will attract full bonuses, while home wins will be offered at a reduced rate. In T20 Internationals, a uniform bonus structure will apply regardless of venue. Test cricket also features additional rewards for series wins against higher-ranked opposition, reflecting the emphasis on elite performance.
At the same time, the revised contracts introduce a disciplinary element, with penalties imposed for series losses. Players may face deductions of around 10 percent from match fees across all formats in the event of underperformance, signalling a stricter accountability-driven approach.
Beyond bonuses and penalties, contracted players will still have access to multiple earning avenues, including retainers, match and tour fees, allowances, and ranking-based incentives, ensuring a comprehensive compensation structure.
According to Sri Lanka Cricket, the revised system is intended to promote excellence, encourage competitive performances, and strengthen the national team’s standing on the global stage.
The changes come amid broader structural reforms within SLC, which have included stricter fitness requirements and enhanced disciplinary provisions in player contracts. While the administration is undergoing internal transitions, observers note that sustained implementation of such performance-driven policies could contribute to long-term improvements in Sri Lanka’s cricketing standards.
Currently, Sri Lanka sits sixth in both the ICC Test and ODI rankings, while occupying eighth position in the T20I standings, highlighting the need for improved consistency across formats.
