Tourists Stranded on Yemeni Island Amid Rising Tensions

The governor of Hadramout has announced that Yemen’s ports and airports are expected to reopen soon, following the removal of southern secessionist forces by Saudi-backed government troops.

Meanwhile, around 400 tourists remain stranded on the Yemeni island of Socotra after flights were suspended due to clashes on the mainland between government forces allied with Saudi Arabia and secessionists supported by the United Arab Emirates.

In recent days, travel to and from Yemen has been heavily disrupted amid intense fighting between rival armed groups aligned with the country’s fragmented government, headquartered in the southern port city of Aden.

Socotra, located 380 km (236 miles) south of Yemen’s mainland, is currently under the control of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council, which has been engaged in conflict with government forces in the Hadramout and al-Mahra provinces.

Yahya bin Afrar, Socotra’s deputy governor for culture and tourism, confirmed that “more than 400 foreign tourists” were stranded after flights were halted. A local official told AFP that 416 people of various nationalities are stuck on the island, including over 60 Russian nationals.

An unnamed Western diplomat also reported that tourists from the UK, France, and the US are among those affected.
