Indonesia and India have officially declared Saturday, March 21, as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, despite the crescent moon not being formally sighted.
This year, the start of the festival varies across countries due to differences in lunar observations. While some nations will celebrate on Friday, March 20, others, including Indonesia and India, will mark the occasion on Saturday.
Other countries announcing Eid for Saturday, March 21, include:
- Bangladesh
- Malaysia
- Singapore
- Brunei
Meanwhile, nations such as Jordan and Oman will observe Eid on Friday.
According to the Islamic Hijri calendar, Ramadan, the ninth month, lasts 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the crescent moon. The following month, Shawwal, begins with Eid al-Fitr, a festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide to mark the end of Ramadan and the start of the new month.
