Tourism Boom: Over Half a Million Visitors Arrive in Sri Lanka in 2026

Tourism in Sri Lanka is showing strong growth in 2026, with the number of international arrivals surpassing the half-million milestone, according to the latest data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA). Between 1 January and 22 February, a total of 505,751 visitors entered the country, underscoring a robust start to the year for the island nation’s travel sector.

The momentum continued into February, which alone saw 228,424 tourists arriving in Sri Lanka. Weekly figures for the first three weeks of the month consistently exceeded 70,000 visitors, with 70,355 recorded in the first week, 77,870 in the second, and 71,101 in the third week. These numbers highlight a sustained interest in Sri Lanka as a tourist destination during the early months of 2026.

Among the top source markets, India contributed 16% of arrivals (37,216 visitors) in the first 22 days of February, followed closely by the United Kingdom, which accounted for 11% (25,867 visitors). Other countries also saw an increase in outbound travelers choosing Sri Lanka as a holiday destination, reflecting the nation’s growing appeal on the global tourism map.

Industry experts attribute part of this surge to the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, hosted across Sri Lanka, which has drawn additional international attention. Matches held in key cities have not only attracted cricket enthusiasts but have also contributed to higher hotel occupancy, restaurant bookings, and local tourism activity, further bolstering the sector.

The SLTDA emphasized that these figures indicate a positive recovery trajectory for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry following recent global disruptions. Officials expressed optimism that continued promotional efforts, combined with major international events, will help maintain strong visitor inflows throughout 2026 and beyond.
