Sri Lanka’s rising athletics talent, Thehara Fernando, has earned a place on the global stage after qualifying for the upcoming World U-20 Athletics Championships set to take place in the United States later this year.
Representing Maris Stella College Thimbirigaskatuwa, the teenage triple jumper delivered an impressive performance at the national selection trials, recording a leap of 15.74 metres. The event was held at Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, where he stood out among the country’s top young athletes.
In addition to securing qualification for the world meet, Fernando also booked his spot at the Asian U-20 Athletics Championships. He further underlined his dominance by clinching first place in the triple jump at the trials.
Guided by his coach, Damitha Dahanayake, Fernando’s achievement marks a significant milestone in his budding career, positioning him as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising young athletes to watch on the global stage.
