Canadian Woman Killed in Shooting Near Mexico’s Teotihuacan Pyramids, 13 Hurt

A tragic shooting incident at Teotihuacan, one of Mexico’s most iconic historical landmarks, has left a Canadian woman dead and 13 others injured, according to authorities.

Officials said the gunman opened fire at the popular tourist destination on Monday before taking his own life. The suspect’s identity and nationality have not yet been confirmed. The attack occurred at the ancient complex, which is home to world-famous pre-Hispanic pyramids and attracts visitors from across the globe.

Six people sustained gunshot wounds and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Among them were tourists from Canada, Colombia, Brazil, and the United States. In addition, seven others were injured during the panic that followed, as visitors rushed to escape the scene. These victims were treated on-site by emergency responders.

The incident unfolded near the Pyramid of the Moon, a major structure within the complex that visitors can climb. Witness footage circulating on social media appeared to show the attacker firing from partway up the pyramid, prompting fear and chaos among tourists below.

Security forces, including police and national guard units, were quickly deployed to the area. Authorities secured the site, recovered a firearm, knife, and ammunition, and evacuated visitors as part of emergency procedures.

The site, located roughly 50 kilometres from Mexico City, is a UNESCO-recognised heritage location known for its historical and cultural significance. Dating back more than 2,000 years, Teotihuacan remains one of the most visited archaeological sites in the country.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described the attack as a “horrific act of gun violence,” while Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a full investigation and expressed condolences to those affected.

The shooting has raised concerns ahead of the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada, and is expected to draw millions of visitors to the region.

Although Mexico has faced ongoing challenges related to organised crime, such incidents at major tourist and heritage sites remain extremely rare. Authorities have pledged to strengthen security and ensure visitor safety as investigations into the motive behind the attack continue.
