Sri Lanka’s Young Paddlers Shine in Shimla, Secure Asian Championship Spots

Sri Lanka’s rising table tennis stars delivered an impressive performance at the South Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship held in Shimla, India, with the nation’s Under-19 and Under-15 teams bringing home multiple medals and earning qualification for the upcoming Asian Youth Championship in Oman.

The Under-19 boys’ team, led by captain Akain Bojith and comprising Hareen Nimdinu, Mathila Sasdinu, and Danuk Lamasuriya, showcased grit and consistency throughout the tournament. Their strong run saw them finish as runners-up behind Bangladesh, clinching the silver medal and booking their place at the 30th Asian Youth Table Tennis Championship scheduled from June 22–28.

Matching their achievement, the Under-19 girls’ team — captained by Tamadi Kavindya and featuring Shamasha Dewmi, Lesanya Sethundi, and Sadinthi Jayasinghe — also secured a commendable silver medal. Competing against top regional talent, the team demonstrated resilience and skill, finishing behind India and qualifying for the continental showdown.

Sri Lanka’s success extended to the Under-15 category as well. The boys’ team, led by Sanon Duljith alongside Yenul Abeywickrama, Kenura Silva, and Onel Shammika, added another silver medal to the tally with a spirited performance. Meanwhile, the Under-15 girls’ team — Chanuki Akshana (captain), Muthuli Sahanya, Hesanya Sesathmi, and Sithma Sandamini — fought hard to secure a bronze medal. Both Under-15 teams earned automatic qualification for the Asian Youth Championship, underlining the depth of emerging talent in the country.

National coach Chathura Dushan praised the teams for their determination and unity, highlighting the challenges faced during the competition. He noted that the Under-19 squads, in particular, had to battle through tough matches to secure their podium finishes, reflecting their growing maturity and competitive spirit.

Adding to the team achievements, Sri Lankan paddlers also made their mark in individual events, collecting ten bronze medals in singles categories. This strong overall performance has boosted confidence within the camp as the young athletes now turn their focus to the Asian Youth Championship in Oman.

With a blend of talent, teamwork, and determination, Sri Lanka’s youth paddlers have signaled their intent on the regional stage — and now look ahead to making a bigger impact at the continental level.
