Second School Term for 2026 Begins Across Sri Lanka

The second academic term for 2026 officially starts today (April 20) in all government and government-approved private Sinhala and Tamil schools across the country.

At the same time, Muslim schools resume the fourth phase of their first term, according to an announcement from the Ministry of Education.

The previous phase of the first term ended on April 10, followed by a holiday period granted until April 19 to coincide with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year celebrations.

With today’s reopening, the second term is scheduled to run continuously until July 24, 2026.

In a separate update, the Ministry confirmed the completion of distributing school uniform fabric for this year. The material, provided as a donation by the Government of China, was allocated to students in government and government-assisted schools, as well as student monks, nuns, and those studying in state-approved Pirivenas.

A total of 11.484 million metres of fabric was supplied under this initiative, benefiting more than 4.4 million students nationwide. Authorities stated that the entire distribution process has now been successfully concluded.
